Winter Activities in the Garden
From the 6th June we start the winter pruning, so activity really heats up. Our volunteers have cleaned and sharpened their secateurs, the mats are ready for the cut off canes and the excitement of starting is on us all. We usually have a pruning demonstration for visitors, so that you can see how we go about our enormous task. Remember, we only work on Wednesdays and Saturdays (and we don't work in the wet).
Of course, if you would like to join our group, we always welcome and train new members in our methods. We prune for maximum display of roses and many years of doing this has shown us the best way to go about it. So come and learn. Just ask one of our volunteers for some information. If they don't know they will find someone who does
If you are plannng an event within the Garden, please appreciate that such functions come under the control of Parks Victoria. You should contact them during business hours on 03 8734 5140 for details.
"La Sevillana" is an outstanding Floribunda, semi double, orange /red which will bloom for an extended period. This is the rose we chose as a standard to replace the row of Cathedral City which suffered badly during our years of drought and heat wave. It is looking good this year.
Just an update on La Sevillana. The rabbits started to enjoy the rootstock the roses were budded onto, so we had to instal tree guards around them all before they were completely ringbarked. We saw it in time to prevent too much damage.
GARDEN EVENTS
We have no special events for the public during this growing period as the Garden is a really special event in itself, so please feel free to come and visit with us.
The Garden is open seven days a week all year round, from 9.30 to 6.30 during the daylight saving period, including public holidays. On rare occasions, Parks Victoria host a paying event in the Mansion Grounds where the public is excluded from the Rose Garden. This has only occurred once in the last five years.
Visitors are particularly welcome to come down on sunny Wednesdays or Saturdays (mornings) and talk to the volunteers as they carry out their pleasant duties. We are very proud to show off our Garden. We don't work when its wet. If you live in the area, come and see what a diverse and pleasant group we are - you may decide to join us as a volunteer - we always need more hands.
Many people decide to use the Victoria State Rose Garden as a venue for their functions. It is a delightful place for any function. Just outside the Garden fence are picnic areas with shelters and barbeques, with ample parking and room for ball games or cricket.
The Supporters do not control such access to the Garden. If you would like to make use of the beautiful surrounds, you should contact Parks Victoria during business hours on 03 8734 5140
